Fall Is Here: 6 Things to Check for Your Dog

Cooler mornings, changing leaves and more comfortable temperatures make fall one of the best times of year to get outside with your dog. But the change of seasons also brings a few things pet parents should keep in mind.

Here are six simple fall check-ins to help keep your dog happy and healthy.

1. Don't forget fleas and ticks.
Cooler weather doesn't automatically mean parasites have disappeared. Keep up with the prevention schedule recommended for your dog rather than stopping simply because summer is over.

2. Watch what your dog investigates.
Dogs explore with their noses—and sometimes their mouths. Mushrooms, unfamiliar plants, compost and other things found around the yard or along a trail can be dangerous if eaten. Don't allow your dog to snack on something you can't identify.

3. Pay attention to seasonal itching.
Just like people, dogs can be affected by environmental allergens. Paw licking, scratching, irritated skin and recurring ear problems can all be reasons to talk with your veterinarian.

4. Notice changes in movement.
Cooler weather may make stiffness or joint discomfort more noticeable, particularly in older dogs. Watch for hesitation before jumping into the car, difficulty climbing stairs, stiffness after resting or a shorter-than-usual stride. Reluctance to move, climb stairs or jump can be a sign of pain.

5. Be ready for shorter days.
If your usual walk is now happening around dusk or after dark, make yourself and your dog easier for drivers to see. A reflective leash, collar or light is an easy addition to your fall walking routine.

6. Do a fall wellness check.
Take a look at your dog's weight, teeth, ears, coat and nails. Are there any new lumps or bumps? Changes in appetite or energy? Sometimes the small changes we notice at home are the first clues that something deserves a closer look.
